Luperon, One Foot in the Past and the Other in the Future
Luperon, DR is a your gateway to discover this beautiful tropical country.
One way that many people arrive here is by boat.
Luperon Bay, Dominican RepublicThere is a very protected harbor here that boaters stop at on there way to the Caribbean or back to the U.S. and the Bahamas. Being on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, hurricanes normally do not pose a great threat here. 1935 Was the last time that a storm did any damage here.
Having a large population of Americans and Europeans, Luperon is the ideal place to serve as a base in the process of discovering this country and it’s culture.
The modern airports in Puerto Plata or Santiago are both easy access to Luperon.
Luperon is a small town on the North Coast in the province of Puerto Plata, about 1 hour and 15 minutes from the Puerto Plata Airport and an hour and a half ride from Santiago, the second largest city in the country.
The country is mountainous with lush valleys and fertile and very green. The countryside can vary from green lush, almost rain forest, to near desert. The mountains have lakes and rivers and a cooler climate than the low lands.
Luperon was isolated until about 20 years ago, keeping modernization away.
The road to Luperon was a hilly, dirt road that crossed several streams and small rivers. When it rained ,the road would be impossible to pass and the rest of the time it was being repaired. The main means of transportation was horses, mules, and donkeys.
It is still common to see people riding donkeys and mules, but it is no longer the main means of transportation.
Another example of the past in the present is the fishermen who still row there boats out in the morning to go fishing.
Yes most of the fishermen have outboards but there are still people tied to the past. They are not doing this to get exercise, it is how they get to work.
The tempo here is laid back and I credit it in part to the fact that the modern world has not completely over run the region. People have cell phones, the internet and every day you see more and more cars, SUVs and trucks.
The local dentist was born and raised in Luperon said when she was in school in the 1980's, there was about 200 horses, mules and donkeys tied up in the school yard and there might have been 4 cars in the entire area.
The people here are rooted in the past and heading to the future.
There are a lot of Americans and Europeans settling here because of this.
They just need to slow down and live at normal or natural pace. This combined with natural beauty of the Luperon area, makes it a location worth thinking about if you are looking for a change for the better
The sunsets on the beaches are always great and the weather is always warm .
